Applicable Medical Conditions
APPLICABLE MEDICAL CONDITIONS:
Save The Arm (TM) proposes to better educate patients and medical staff about conditions where needle sticks, IV access, PICC line access and/or trauma/pressure to an arm should be avoided. Such conditions include but are not exclusively limited to:
- Future Hemodialysis Access: Patients likely requiring the need for future arterio-venous (AV) fistula or graft access in a forearm for hemodialysis access.
- Hemodialysis Patients: Patients with existing AV fistula or graft access who should not receive sticks, IV access or PICC line access in the affected arm.
- Acquired Lymphedema: Patients with acquired lymphedema conditions secondary to things like surgeries such as mastectomy or previous upper extremity venous or lymphatic damage, where needle sticks, IV access and/or PICC line problems might result in serious injury.
- Congenital Lymphedema: Patients with congenital lymphedema conditions secondary to things like congenital upper extremity venous or lymphatic damage, where needle sticks, IV access and/or PICC line problems might result in serious injury.
- Other Protected Upper Extremity Conditions: Other conditions where upper extremity needle sticks, IV access and/or PICC line placement are not advised.
